The Community School for Social Justice is a proud member of the NY Performance Standards Consortium which means that instead of having Regents exams as all of the graduation requirements, some are replaced with Performance Based Assessment Tasks, or PBATs. PBATs require students to design and accomplish deep inquiry projects and defend thesis papers in four core subject areas. We are also the only NYC Outward Bound School in the Bronx. This means that CSSJ uses an approach to education that joins together demanding and engaging learning, community, and character in ways that lead to high achievement for all. It also means that we focus on character and community development through opportunities to camp overnight, strong post-secondary planning and team-building through Advisory. Advisory, or Family Group, is the core of our school. Our advisory classes meet four times a week with a teacher, or Family Group Advisor and stay together for four years with the same group of students.Through Family Group, students will work together and experience new things throughout their four years at CSSJ while receiving a high level of support from their teacher and their peers.At CSSJ, students work with a team of highly trained counselors, social workers and high school professionals who focus on individual student needs and their high school journey. Our College Advisory Team will ensure that all students are accepted into college and full-time college and career counselors work with them to explore post-secondary goals and complete college and scholarship applications. Our CSSJ students are performers, thinkers, activists and athletes and they are our greatest assets and our pride and joy!
